Honda Lawn Mowers - HRR216VXA

The Honda HRR216VXA lawn mower is the on the higher end of the HRR series because of the extra features and specifications but is more expensive at a MSRP of $579. This Honda lawn mower has the Smart Drive™ feature for quick and easy changes in speed settings and also includes the Roto-Stop® Blade Brake Clutch for stopping the blades without turning off the engine. At a price of at least $100 over the other Honda HRR lawn mower series, the Honda HRR216VXA is still a good option for those who really desire the variable speed for quicker mowing.

Honda HRR216VXA Lawn Mower Reviews

"mzcg-6735051"

"I do not recommend this model. After one month of use, we were ready to give it away and write it off as an expensive lesson learned. The so called Smart Drive requires an extraordinary amount of pressure from the operator's two thumbs. After spending two hours cutting our lawn, the pain is excruciating. Secondly, grass clippings become lodged underneath the mower in the area where cables are housed, and as a result the blades cannot engage properly. Each time the mower is used, this mess has to be cleaned out by pushing a toothbrush or screwdriver through the 2" opening. Clearly, the people who designed this mower have no experience cutting the grass. Needless to say, we won't be purchasing another Honda mower."

"I agree completely with the other review. I will be throwing this POS away after one year of use in the Midwest. The gas tank was not properly sealed and had to be repaired before I even used it. The thumb drive should be used as a torture device--who needs waterboarding when you have Honda "Smart Drive"--what a classic oxymoron. I will never buy a Honda branded product of any kind ever again."

"This is a terrible mower only had it a few months the Smart drive is a pain on the thumbs and the Roto stop has worn out and disengages continuously unless the blade control lever "

"Definitely recommend this mower. Started on the first pull and mowing has never been easier. Great Job HONDA!"

"FOR THOSE OF YOU DOGGING THIS MOWER, YOU MUST BE COMPLETE MORONS. AS A TEENAGER I HAD A LAWN MOWING SERVICE, AND HONDA MOWERS WERE MONEY MAKING MACHINES. IF YOU DO VERY MINIMAL MAINTENANCE JOBS TO YOUR MOWER, IT WILL LAST FOREVER. IF YOU THINK THEY ARE "POS", I CHALLENGE YOU TO GO AND TRY ANYTHING ELSE OUT ON THE MARKET. YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE TERM "POS" IF YOU ARE DUMB ENOUGH TO PURCHASE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A HONDA."

"Highly recommended! I've used it for two summers and other than a clutch adjustment covered by warranty I've had no problems and it does a great job. By the way, my thumbs are fine (some people will apparently complain about anything)."

"Great mower. Easy to start and love the smart drive. Highly recommended."

"Don't be discouraged by the other posts. This mower starts on the first pull even after 3 years of use in the midwest. Yes the smart drive does wear out your thumb muscles, but unless you are a toddler, most adults can handle it. Bags better than any mower, and can chew through any height or thickness of grass."

"Great mower, highly recommended. I have used it commercially for 18 months now and I think these people who are complaining are old ladies. The hand grips have probably moved up against the thumb control and they just need to move them down a bit. The system is very useful and the mower is tough. Please don't listen to people who wait too long to mow their lawns, then blame the mower when it clogs. I've used many mowers on many lawns, and this one is just great. A pleasure. "

"For those who have had issues with the blade disengaging, Honda has an upgrade that is free of charge that really helps."

"Definitely not up to Honda's standards. They warned me not to buy a "middle of the line" Honda but I didn't listen. Shame on me."

"This Honda mower is the biggest piece of garbage invented. They should call it the dumbass drive system. Nothing smart about having to push a mower with your thumbs until they internally bleed"

"I HAVE THE BBC DISENGAGES SHORTLY AFTER STARTING TO MOW.HAS THIS PART BEEN RECALLED? I HOPE HONDA WILL COVER THIS WITH A REPLACEMENT!"

"I purchased the HRR216VXA for the second time today. I ran the first one for 3 weeks and the two idle speeds failed. The slower idle speed killed the engine. I could have made the adjustment but the thing was 3 weeks old. Plus, the engine idled very, very rough. My gas was 2 hours fresh. I even drained the old fuel to make sure it wasn't the fuel. I took it back to the home improvement store within 30 days and they recommended not trading it for the high end Toro. They said they get more Toro's back than Hondas and I just got a lemon. They ran the engine of my returned machine and couldn't believe it. It is what it is. I will try it another 30 days. The thumb smart drive isn't that bad if you get the variable position smart drive where you can chose a position that works for you. I expected more from Honda but have had worse luck with Toro and Briggs & Stratton."

"Was thinking of buying one, but was skeptical of the thumb control and possible joint problems therefrom. after reading the reviews, I'm staying with my old Snapper."

"I borrowed this mower from a friend to 'test drive' before buying. I can see why he was interested in selling it. The bagging system is worse than bad. I am still coughing up dirt and debris. Stay away for your healths sake. "

"The smart drive is meant for the palm or base of you hand, not your thumbs!"

"terrible mower, that thumb control is absurd. Also, terrible placement of the speed control, every time I mow under a bush or a tree the control is pushed backward and the mower shuts off or is reduced to an idle. Also, I finally had to use a bungee cord to keep the mower engage lever engaged- exactly the opposite of the safety feature it was designed to be. "

"I purchased this HRR2165VXA mower in April 09. Ran great all summer until Sept when easy start was no longer easy. When mower was in idle it would race up and down then after a couple of minutes would quit. If left in cutting speed it would be ok and never quit while cutting. I was able to use it through the end of October. I then called the power store that sold it to me for repair. They said to bring it in anytime. So I did about 3 weeks later. After explaining what my problem was the person says to me "It's a bad gas problem and not covered by warranty" If you keep gas more than 2 weeks it goes bad he says. Needless to say I got angry and irate. I've been using a gas stabilizer to prevent this problem. Not only that but he hadn't even looked at the mower yet to determine what the problem might be. Well 3 weeks later I get a call saying my mower is ready and they had to rebuild the carb. No mention that I'm going to get charged for fixing. To make a long story short when I pick up the mower I'm hit with a $70.00 bill. Seems the person who called me didn't know the difference from rebuilding a carb to cleaning a carb. I got in touch with Honda to explain my problem but was told that since it was a bad gas problem it wasn't covered but they now had my complaint on record. No solace to me. I paid good money for this mower. I'm finding it very true that they just don't make um like they use to. And further more I used the same gas in my snowblower that started up on the 3rd pull and has been running just fine for the 3 times I have used it. This is the 1st Honda I have bought and will be the last."

"trash is the word everyone is looking for....I bent the main shaft in mine before it had 10 hrs. on it and didn't even hit anything hard. This is no more than bad engineering , I have never seen this happen before on any of the newer mowers "

"The thumb Drive has been updated and is now adjustable so you can use the palms of you're hand and works beautifully. A retrofit is available for the original design. "

"Roto-stop disengages. Never take the roto stop apart to fix it. You will never get it back together. Spent hours on this thing. "

"I bought this mower reconditioned from Home Depot about 4 years ago. I payed about $299 with 10% off. And quite frankly, I wished I never gave away my MTD push mower. The other reviewers were correct, complete torture. Perhaps this mower was made for gorillas, because the pressure required to operate the smart drive is beyond human capability after about 15 minutes. If you want to get a head start on carpal tunnel, this is the mower for you, just make sure you work for a national landscape chain so that you can collect a lifetime of disability. I have attached a bungie cord to the thumb press and that seems to work, and I get a good workout at the same time chasing this thing around the yard...cuts my mowing time in half. Yes, it starts on the first pull, and like pavlov's dogs' I am now programmed to twitch and shudder at what is about to come, pass the dog treats please, this is one of Honda's sick experiments go really bad. I used to enjoy mowing the yard."

"Great mower,Smart drive has a lock feature so thumbs do not cramp up. I have an incline in the back yard, and the rear wheel drive works perfect. "

"Starts Easily, The only time it takes more than two or three pulls is when you put the mower on it's side. Clean out packed grass, upright it and it may take 5 or 6 pulls to start. Having said that after it had been on it side, it can start with two pulls. Smart Drive 2007 model does require thumb pressure. I am giving up my HRR2163VXA because of that. New 2010 models do allow controlling speed with heel of the hand pressure. HRX top of the line offer speed control that is based on a hydrostatic transmission. One lever sets engine speed. The other controls self propelled speed. A simple lever at a handy height, easily moved allowing changing mower forward speed CONVENIENTLY. This HRR2163VXA has an overhead Cam & Valve engine. I got mine at half price from Home Depot. The Blade Brake Clutch did not work properly. Once this was adjusted it has not been a problem."

"Had mine 3 years - motor is fine, and the smart drive is ok. I can use it, but my kids thumbs get tired. More of an issue is the Roto-Stop blade control. Late last year it started disengaging unexpectedly once in a while. now it does it all the time, and renders the mower nearly useless. Runs great, but can't cut grass."

"Purchased an HRR model at Home Depot - had starting troubles from day 1 - took it to the Honda dealer and got the bad gas lecture (silly BS). Dealer replaced the carb, still hard to start took it back and they replaced a cracked isolator plate, still hard to start wrote a letter to Honda North America, never got a response. Out of desperation contacted Home Depot 12 months after the purchase, brought the Honda into HD they looked at it said this machine looks brand new - I said it should it's been in the shop more than in my garage - the store manager offered to swap it out for a new one (buy HD they are the best). Get the new one home and it's still hard to start even with fresh premium gas - usually have to use starter fluid - Honda has a quality problem and their customer service is aloof at best "

"I bought my HRR2165VXA in May 08, Homedepot replaced it in May 09 and in May 10 the right rear wheel fell off. Do I need say anymore?"

"I LOVE mine! It replaced a Toro which is the worst I ever had!"

"my smart drive wont work after 5 years of use. any way i can fix it? "

"What a great mower, thumb pressure isn't bad at all if you adjust appropriately. The mower provides nice even cut and the speed is easily adjustable. If I had to gripe about anything it would be, I wish the deck height would go up another inch. Will probably just put bigger tires on it."

"Not a good lawn mower. Hard on the thumbs and the Roto-Stop disengages constantly. Have fixed the Roto-Stop by taking it apart 3 times to file down the groove...it's on it's last summer as I'm having a hard time finding the Roto-Stop part to replace."

"The only thing that I have found wrong with this lawn mower is that it is hard to clean the clippings from underneath the mower in the area where the cables are housed. Other than that, I really like it."

"From the beginning I have had nothing but trouble. I had to buy the improved thumb drive once it was available to replace the duct taped boards that I had improvised so I could use it the first season. I used it twice this year by bending the bar that you hold to keep the clutch engaged. It is such a minor defect in their design, but what a difference it made! The leaf bag continued to leave a dust cloud even after adjusting it's angle, but it doesn't matter now, the shaft seems to be bent now after two mowing this year. I'm using my 15 year old Toro again. It is so much easier to operate and I will be glad to junk the Honda. It is the worst junk I have ever owned and not even up to par with the MTD that I use at my rental property. I can't believe I held Honda in such high esteem. You buy this mower at your own peril. I started with a positive view of Honda, but I will never buy another because it is very expensive for about 8 times mowing the yard."
